    Agreed--the Catholic Hymnal and Service Book was a classy hymnal that, unfortunately, came out the same year as The Hymnal for Young Christians. What an era!

    For anyone who might be interested, back in the '90's I compiled a bibliography of postconciliar Catholic hymnals that was published in The Hymn in 1998. Of course, it's woefully out of date now. Also, I was not able to download the complete article from HathiTrust, but I got up to 1994. (The most recent hymnal I included in this study was the Adoremus Hymnal. That page wasn't available, though.)

    Lawrence...........your post reminded me of a vignette which is pertinent. During a choral seminar attended by ~200 choir-directors given by Roger Wagner here in Milwaukee, Wagner asked the assembly "How many of you have sung Beethoven's 'Solemnis'? Mozart's 'C Minor'? Bach's B Minor'?"

    About 50 people raised their hands at each question; the others sat mute.

    Then he asked "Well, then, how can you claim to be choir directors?"

    High bars, and all that.
