Gregorian Chant and Modern Composition for the Catholic Liturgy: Charles Tournemire’s L’Orgue Mystique as Guide

The Church Music Association of America will hold a conference exploring Charles Tournemire’s landmark L’Orgue Mystique on February 1-3, 2012 on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale and at the Church of the Epiphany in South Miami. The conference seeks to explore the aesthetic, liturgical, and compositional principles of L’Orgue Mystique, the implications of the work for modern compositions inspired by Gregorian chant, and the role of modern compositions and the organ in the Catholic liturgy.

Opening Recital

Wednesday, February 1, 7:30 p.m. – Church of the Epiphany

The opening recital by concert organist Jonathan Ryan will feature works by Tournemire, de Grigny, Frescobaldi, Buxtehude, Sweelinck, Böhm and J.S. Bach.

Solemn Pontifical High Mass for the Feast of Candlemas in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite

Thursday, February 2, 7:30 p.m. – Church of the Epiphnay

We are pleased to welcome His Excellency, Thomas G. Wenski, Archbishop of Miami as the celebrant for the conference Mass.

Ceremonial and logistical assistance for the Mass is provided through the generous efforts of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP).

Musical highlights include Tournemire’s office from L’Orgue Mystique for the day (Purificatio B. Mariæ Virginis), a Missa Brevis by Zachary Wadsworth, and a commissioned motet by Dr. Paul Weber.

The conference will present an entire day of recitals by artists from around the U.S. and Poland, featuring repertoire ranging from Naji Hakim and original compositions and improvisations by conference artists to the works of Tournemire, Franck and Langlais.

Keynote Lecture

Friday, February 3, 1:30 – 2:30 – Nova Southeastern University

The keynote lecture entitled “The Composer as Textual Commentator: Music and Language in Tournemire‘s Symbolist Method” will be given by Dr. Stephen Schloesser, S.J.  Schloesser is an Associate Professor of History at Loyola University in Chicago and the author of Jazz Age Catholicism with its noted chapter on Tournemire.  He is currently working on a book about Messiaen.

Closing Recital

The closing recital will be given by Rudy de Vos, Director of Music and Organist at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, CA.  The recital will feature works by Tournemire, Vierne, Roberday, Marchand, Franck and Lanquetuit.

Registration

The conference registration fee is $75 and includes the conference materials and transportation to conference events from the conference hotel per the conference schedule.

The registration fee is non-refundable.  All conference presenters are required to register for the conference.  Only complete registrations will be available; no 1-day or partial registrations are available.  Advance registration is required; no on-site registration is available. 

All conference events at the Church of the Epiphany are free and open to the public, though a free-will donation will be accepted at the door.  However, in order to attend all of the conference events, including the events at NSU, registration is required.   Registration is free for NSU students, faculty and staff.

The deadline for conference registration and payment is Monday, January 2, 2012. 

The deadline for presenter registration and payment is Thursday, December 15, 2012.

Travel

Ft. Lauderdale is home to a large international airport which bears the code FLL.  The Miami International Airport (MIA) is also in the vicinity, though it is significantly farther from the conference hotel.

Transportation from FLL to the conference hotel, the Hyatt Place Plantation-Ft. Lauderdale, is available via shuttle between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily.  In order to take this free shuttle, reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance by contacting either Rebecca or Amy at (954) 370-2220, option 2.  Transportation via taxi is also available and usually costs around $33-$40.

Travel to and from the official conference hotel for conference events is available for registered participants per the conference schedule (see above.)  If more flexibility in a transportation schedule is required, or if lodging at a location other than the conference hotel, a car rental will be required.  Please note that the conference shuttle will operate on a strict time schedule to keep the conference running smoothly and that late arrivals for the shuttle will mean a missed shuttle.

Lodging

The conference hotel is the Hyatt Place Plantation-Ft. Lauderdale, located at 8530 West Broward Blvd., Plantation, FL 33324; Telephone – (954) 370-2220.

The conference hotel rate, available for the nights of 02/01/12 – 02/04/12, is $99 (plus 11.22% tax) per room, per night for single, double, triple and quadruple occupancy.

The deadline for hotel reservations at the conference rate is Sunday, January 1st, 2012. 

Guests at the Hyatt Place can order freshly prepared entrées and appetizers from the Guest Kitchen or select from ready-to-eat sandwiches, salads and bakery items from the Grab ‘N Go case; both are available 24 hours a day. They also feature Starbucks specialty coffees, wine and premium beers in their Bakery Café.  Other dining options close to the Hyatt are available here.

Dining Options

All participants are responsible for their own meals.

Guests staying at the conference hotel will receive a complimentary continental breakfast.  There are a number of other dining options close to the hotel.

Dining on Thursday while the conference is in South Miami is available in the beautiful, nearby downtown of South Miami.  The area features a number of fantastic restaurants in all price ranges.  A shuttle will be available during the lunch and dinner breaks to transport registered participants to nearby restaurants and back again to Epiphany.

Dining on Friday while the conference is at Nova Southeastern University is available on campus or nearby in Davie.  Restaurants and cafés are available in the conference building, as well as at other locations on campus.  Participants can also board the free campus shuttle for transportation to other local restaurants.
