Simple English Propers Organ Accompaniments are available

In the three years since CMAA published Adam Bartlett’s collection of antiphons and psalms Simple English Propers, many parishes have adopted the SEP and sung the melodies without organ accompaniment, as indeed they were designed. But through that same time we’ve also been asked whether we would ever offer a companion set of organ accompaniments.

In 2014, composer Ryan Dingess has fulfilled that request by publishing his own two-volume set to accompany the Simple English Propers. Ryan has kindly allowed CMAA to offer the books as a free PDF download (Volume I | Volume II). In addition, the volumes are available in hardcopy form from lulu.com.

Simple English Propers

This is the home of Simple English Propers, a project and book by Adam Bartlett. This extraordinary work has been met with widespread acclaim for the beauty and versatility of the music, and also for being the first generally accessible book of chanted propers in English for every parish. It provides complete entrance, offertory, and communion propers in English with psalms in modal chant, with four-line notation, for Sundays and solemnities. They can be sung by a single cantor or a full choir. The modes from the Gregorian original are wholly preserved to capture the sound and feel of the Graduale Romanum proper chants. They follow a total of 24 chant formulas to make singing easy for any choir in any parish. The project was sponsored by the Church Music Association of America, and the book Simple English Propers is a CMAA publication.

Mass Propers in English

The Propers of the Mass are liturgical texts that vary from day to day according to the calendar: the Introit, the Gradual, the Responsorial Psalm, the Alleluia Verse (and the Lenten Tract which substitutes for it), the Offertory Chant, and the Communion Antiphon.

In recent years, there has been a flowering of musical settings in English for the proper texts of Mass, providing easy ways for choirs, cantors, and congregations to sing these authentic liturgical texts.

Over twenty collections of propers in English have appeared, and this page is a catalog of them. Many are available as free downloads or as printed books, so that you can sample some of the pieces while you decide which ones are most useful for your parish.

Some of these collections provide only one type of antiphon: that is, only entrance chants or only communion chants, while some provide several proper chants for the different parts of Mass. Also, some are based on Anglican-tradition texts, while some are based on texts published under Catholic authority.

Support the English Propers Project

The ChantCafe.com, a project of CMAA, is pushing a campaign to raise money for the composition and compiling of a complete set of English-language chant propers to be released into the commons in time for the new Missal translation. These musical settings can be used by any parish and are in keeping with the new emphasis of singing the Mass rather than merely singing at Mass. This one will be the first complete set of Introits, Offertories, and Communions (with complete Psalm verses) in print since the promulgation of the ordinary form – a remarkable fact but one that illustrates the importance of the project. These settings provide a bridge to truly sacred music! The project needs to be completed and posted for everyone.

The translation he uses is from the Roman Gradual. The propers will be stable through time, and belong to everyone forever. This effort will give sacred music the kick start that it needs.

To make your donation, which can be as small as $1, please go here to the page that allows these micro-commissions. To see all the posts related to this topic, browse the tag on the ChantCafe.

Member-College-Main-St-Augustine_0-300x188CHANT COLLOQUIUM 2016
August 11-14, 2016
Saint Augustine’s Seminary, Toronto

The Gregorian Institute of Canada is pleased to announce its 11th Annual Colloquium, to be held at St. Augustine’s Seminary, Toronto, ON, August 11-14. Our plans include a series of practical chant workshops ranging from introductory to advanced, featuring the outstanding clinician Adam Bartlett, composer and editor of Simple English Propers (CMAA, 2011), and editor of the Lumen Christi Missal, Lumen Christi Simple Gradual, and Lumen Christi Hymnal (Illuminare Publications, 2012-2015). Active as a teacher, workshop leader and speaker, Adam has traveled widely offering catechetical and training workshops on topics of Catholic sacred music and liturgical chant.

The colloquium also includes a series of scholarly papers in honour of the late Andrew Hughes, renowned Canadian chant scholar and Professor at the University of Toronto.

In addition to the workshops and lectures, there will be daily offices and Sunday mass sung with Gregorian Chant.

The Program and Registration Form are online at www.gregorian.ca .
