Updated: Mass propers in English

We’ve updated our list of projects offering English versions of the Mass proper chants. The propers are antiphons specified in the Church’s liturgical books for the specific Sundays and other days of the Church year. They are given to be sung, for example, at the entrance rite, the offertory procession, and during Holy Communion. Their texts can be drawn from the Roman Missal or from the Graduale Romanum, as specified in the General Instruction for the Roman Missal at sections 48, 74, and 87.

With the latest update, this list now has information on thirty websites, projects, and publications with scores you can view, download, or buy.

Royce Nickel: Passion According To Saint Matthew (Palm Sunday, Year A)

Composer Royce Nickel has prepared a setting of the Palm Sunday Passion Gospel for Year A (St. Matthew) for three-part choir (SAB) and three soloists (T, B, Ba), and has shared it with us. He writes:

“The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew”, a setting of the Gospel appointed for Palm Sunday in Year A, according to the Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States.  Following the tradition of sung Passions, this work provides three solo parts for most of the narrative and choral sections (SAB) for the voice of the crowd.  The choral passages are well within the ability of a modest parish choir.  The solo parts of tenor, bass (Christus) and baritone (Evangelist) employ simple reciting formulas, each set at its own pitch level within a Mode 3 (Phrygian) modality.
